Premier Vizslas

Shane has many passions he enjoys outside of practicing law. He is an avid hunter and has developed a keen understanding and skill when it comes to training bird-hunting dogs. Below Shane describes his history with the sport and his business, Premier Vizslas, which strives to provide a companion bird dog that is a top performer in the field, looks great, behaves well and is a longtime companion.

I was raised on a wheat farm in Western Kansas and have been an avid bird hunter all my life. Located in Dodge City, Kansas, I have ample opportunity to put my Premier Vizslas on wild pheasant and quail.   While pen-raised birds are fun to hunt and provide adequate initial training for a young dog, there is simply no substitute for the cunning of wild birds. Frequent contact (5-7 days per week) with wild birds for the first season or two is essential, and, if lost, is difficult if not impossible to recapture. Once the knowledge and talent is acquired, however, that skill set will stay with the Premier Vizsla for the rest of its life. In addition, Premier Vizslas are gun-broke and taught to return, whoa, retrieve, back and kennel to voice, hand and whistle commands.

I had the privilege of hunting behind my first Vizsla, Coach, for 17 years; he won my heart and made me a devoted Vizsla fan.   Coach stayed focused, hunted hard and patiently worked cagey birds until out-maneuvered, held tight and was joyfully flushed by the hunter, oftentimes within only inches of the hunter. Nearly every time he hunted with a group, Coach would find the first or often first three to four birds of the day, at which time someone in the group would ask “Hey, can that dog hunt in front of me?” I would respond with “That’s fine if you can convince him to do so.” If I was in the field, Coach would stay within 30 or 40 yards of me, moving like a windshield wiper ahead of me until he picked up the scent of a hidden bird. However, if I was not in the field, Coach gladly hunted for my buddies; this would make for some interesting offers, as Coach quickly outranked me as their most favored hunting companion.

A loyal and focused companion bird dog like Coach is hard to find, and while I initially struggled to find a replacement for Coach, I was fortunate to find Prairie Vizslas. Owned by Mitch and Cindy Staatz in Chapman, Kansas, they produce outstanding Vizslas. Prairie Vizslas come from the distinguished lines of Rebel Rouser, Murray and OnPoint kennels. Coach was from the Rebel Rouser line. In order to properly socialize and allow the necessary time and experience with wild birds, I limit myself to one or two Premier Vizslas per season to mentor and coach. As a result, supply is extremely limited. If you lack the time, setting and ability to train your own bird dog or you just wish to eliminate the uncertainty and work it takes to make an excellent gun dog and companion hunter, consider getting yourself a Premier Vizsla where each is trained individually with very special care, affection and attention.

If you think a Premier Vizsla might be the perfect fit for you and are willing to invest $5,000.00 into having a skilled and focused hunting companion by your side, please contact Shane at 620-338-1619.
